Sincona sale 4, lot 4462

This specimen was lot 4462 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011) where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$532 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Meiningen, Herzogtum Bernhard II. Erich Freund, 1803-1866. Doppelgulden 1854, München. Kl. Kr. Fast FDC. (Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, Bernard II, 1803-66, double gulden of 1854, Munich mint. Nice uncirculated)."

The petty state of Saxe-Meiningen was a splinter of the Ernestine line of Saxon dukes. After World War One, all the princes were forced to abdicate and the area amalgamated into the state of Thuringia. This type is the only double gulden listed for the state.

Recorded mintage: 187,000.
