Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg 1764 2/3 thaler
This specimen was part of lot 4525 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,677 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, AB 1672 SACHSEN-GOTHA-ALTENBURG Friedrich II., 1691-1732. Lot. Kleine Sammlung von Münzen, geprägt unter der Regentschaft von Friedrich II., vom Pfennig bis zum 1/2 Taler. 26 Stück. Sehr schön-fast Stempelglanz. (duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Frederick II, 1691-1732, small collection of coins struck under the regency of Frederick II, from a pfennig to a half thaler, 26 pieces, very fine to uncirculated.)"
Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was created in 1672 when the duke of Saxe-Gotha inherited the duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, whose ruler had died without heirs. The two duchies were officially merged in 1680 and the new state remained intact until 1825. This gulden was nominally two-thirds of a thaler but weighed half a convention thaler.
