Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55750

This specimen was lot 55750 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. 1/24 Taler, 1764-LCK. Friedrich III. ANACS MS-64. From the Augustana Collection." This type was struck 1763-68 and 1771 and has a low catalog value unrelated to its actual rarity. It was worth five kreuzer. Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was erected in 1680 and lasted until 1825, when the line fell extinct. The duchies were partitioned between Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and Saxe-Hildburghausen.
