Sardinia 1791 doppia Fr-1120
This specimen was lot 21267 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Sardinia. Doppia, 1791. Vittorio Amadeo III. NGC MS-63. Boldly struck and fully lustrous with medium honey golden toning. No distracting marks or nicks and quite attractive. From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II." The Duchy of Savoy was promoted to the Kingdom of Sardinia when the duke obtained that island from the Austrians in 1720. This type is listed in the SCWC for 1786-96. The doppia was originally a double scudo d'oro. Carlo Emanuele lost his throne in the Napoleonic invasions but his descendant became king of the unified Italy in 1860.
