This specimen was lot 3094 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Sardinia. Doppia, 1788. Vittorio Amedeo III (1773-96). NGC AU-58. WINGS Approved. Good strike, dies showing a little bit of wear with some brush marks and light rust. A few very light adjustment marks present as well. Only some light wear on the tops of the relief and only a few trivial contact marks. Full original luster making the piece very appealing to the eye." The Duchy of Savoy was promoted to the Kingdom of Sardinia when the duke obtained that island from the Austrians in 1720. This type is listed in the SCWC for 1786-96. The doppia was originally a double ducat. Carlo Emanuele lost his throne in the Napoleonic invasions but his descendant became king of the unified Italy in 1860.
