Sardinia 1793 doppia Fr-1120
This specimen was lot 2681 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 6,000 CHF (about US$8,080 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Savoyen / Sardinien, Vittorio Amedeo III. 1773-1796. Doppia 1793, Torino. Sehr selten. NGC MS61. Das durch NGC zweithöchstbewertete Exemplar. (Italy, kingdom of Sardinia, Victor Amadeus III, 1773-96, doppia of 1793, Turin mint. Very rare, Second finest certified by NGC.)"
The Duchy of Savoy was promoted to the Kingdom of Sardinia when the duke obtained that island from the Austrians in 1720. This type is listed in the SCWC for 1786-96. The doppia was originally a double scudo d'oro.
