Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 2176

This specimen was lot 2176 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €130 (about US$185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

" ITALIE, SAVOIE et SARDAIGNE, Victor Amédée III (1773-1796), AR reale, 1793, Cagliari. Pour la Sardaigne. D/ T. à d. R/ +/INIM EI/ IND CONF/ 1793. Beau à Très Beau. (Italy, Savoy and Sardinia, Victor Amadeus III, 1773-96, silver real of 1793, Cagliari mint, for the island of Sardinia. Obverse: head right; reverse: legend and date. Fine - Very Fine.)"

In 1720, the Austrians traded Sardinia to Savoy in exchange for Sicily. The duke of Savoy, who would have preferred to keep Sicily, reluctantly adopted the title of king of Sardinia. This type was struck 1792-96 and overlapped KM 68 (1773-96, arms reverse) and KM 96 (1797-99, for Carlo Emanuele). It was not intended to circulate on the mainland.
