This specimen was lot 33766 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Scudo 1974 MS67 NGC. A lovely and nearly pristine example with slightly watery surfaces. Currently tied for finest graded." San Marino is in the Italian Apennines and is a protectorate of Italy but remains independent. o coins were struck 1939-71. This type was struck in Rome to honor the patron saint, St. Marinus. San Marinan circulating coinage was based on the lira but gold commemoratives were usually one, two or five scudi. The one and two scudi were normally sold in sets. San Marino now uses the euro.
