"Sigismund III. von Schrattenbach, 1753-1771. Dukat 1756. Ohne Signatur unter dem Brustbild. GOLD. Leicht gewellt, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Sigismund III of Schrattenbach, 1753-71, ducat of 1756, without engraver's initials below the bust. Lightly waved, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1754-63 and is common for a ducat. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.46 g.
