Salzburg 1728 thaler Dav-1241
This specimen was lot 40421 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,092.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1728. NGC MS-62. Leopold Anton Eleutherius von Firmian (1727-44). Toned, sharply struck. Demarete Collection." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1728-35 and is priced about triple the thalers of Mozart's time.
