"Franz Anton von Harrach, 1709-1727. 1/2 Reichstaler 1711, 1716, 1717, 1718. Mit Stern (Stempelschneider P. H. Müller) unter dem Brustbild. Probszt 2020, 2023, 2024, 2025; Zöttl Type 2 = 2433, 2436, 2437, 2438. 4 Stück., Zum Teil mit Fehlern, sonst meist sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Francis Anthony of Harrach, 1709-27, half thalers of 1711-18, with star under the bust. Four pieces, some with defects, otherwise mostly very fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1710-20. Franz Anton was the first archbishop in several generations to place his portrait on the coinage. The contemporary KM 310 (not struck in 1716) is the traditional half thaler with the Madonna on the obverse. Bust and Madonna half thalers are both quite scarce and are priced higher than the thalers. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
