This specimen was lot 23118 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $352.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Salzburg. Franz Anton Taler 1716-Star, AU Details NGC obverse scratched, lightly toned with a few marks on the obverse, including one old-time scratch. Scarce type. From The J.G. Collection." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1710-20 and is priced about four times the thalers of Mozart's time.
