This specimen was lot 24137 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Salzburg. Franz Anton Taler 1716, MS61 NGC. A fully attractive example with unbelievable, silvery-gray patination and underlying pearlescent toning. A remarkable representation of Madonna and child with only one certified example grading higher." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1712-22 and is priced about three times the thalers of Mozart's time.
