Salzburg 1628 thaler Dav-3499
The first specimen was lot 1041 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €560 (about US$897 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, SALZBOURG, Archevêché, Paris von Lodron (1619-1653), AR Taler, 1628, Consécration de la cathédrale. Droit: Sur une nuée, saint Rupert et saint Virgile tenant une maquette de la cathédrale au-dessus des armoiries de l'archevêque. Revers: Une procession de huit évêques portant les reliques des saints. Belle patine. Superbe à Fleur de Coin. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Paris of Lodron (1619-33), silver thaler of 1628, on the consecration of the cathedral. Obverse: on a cloud, saints Rupert and Vergil bear a model of the cathedral, arms below; reverse: a procession of eight bishops bear the relics of the saints. Nice patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The second specimen was lot 3214 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $246.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1628. Paris von Lodron (1619-53). NGC AU Details--Mount Removed. Commemorating the consecration of the Cathedral. Previously mounted. Nice old cabinet toning." The third specimen was lot 3097 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$471 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Salzburg, Erzbistum, Paris Graf Lodron, 1619-1653 Taler 1628. Auf die Domweihe. Gutes sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Paris of Lodron (1619-53), thaler of 1628, on the consecration of the cathedral, good very fine.)"
This one year type is not rare but is priced about double the regular issue (Dav-3497) of 1623-53.
