This specimen was lot 23121 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Salzburg. Paris von Lodron Taler 1623, MS63 NGC, a choice mint state example with silvery-gray toning and full mint luster." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1620-24 and is one of the commonest thalers of the seventeenth century.
