Salzburg 1637 thaler Dav-3504
This silver thaler was minted in Salzburg in 1637. The specimen was lot 3614 in Goldberg sale 59 (Beverly Hills, May 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria - Salzburg. Taler, 1637. Paris Graf Lodron. Madonna and child. Toned. About Extremely Fine." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1623-53 and is one of the commonest thalers of the seventeenth century.
