This specimen was part of lot 2751 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €825 (about US$1,066 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, 1612-1619. 1/2 Reichstalerklippe 1615, 1617, 1619. Probszt 981, 983, 985; Zöttl Type 4 = 1184, 1186, 1187. 3 Stück., Mit Fehlern, sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Mark Sittich of Hohenems, 1612-19, klippe half thalers of 1615-19. Three pieces, with defects, very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in round (KM 36) and klippe format (shown here) 1614-18. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 37 (klippe format), Probszt 981; Zöttl 1184 (type 4).
