Künker sale 384, lot 2743

This specimen was lot 2743 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,169 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, 1612-1619. Doppelte Reichstalerklippe 1616. RR Feine Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Mark Sittich of Hohenems, 1612-19, klippe double thaler of 1616. Very rare, fine patina, minor edge defects, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in round format 1614-19 but is unlisted in the SCWC as a klippe. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
