Künker sale 384, lot 2758

This specimen was lot 2758 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €160 (about US$207 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, 1612-1619. 1/8 Reichstalerklippe 1616. RR Henkelspur, Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Mark Sittich of Hohenems, 1612-19, klippe one-eighth thaler of 1616. Very rare, mount mark, die cracks, very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in round (KM 13) and klippe format (shown here) 1612-16. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
