This specimen was lot 2753 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,050 (about US$1,357 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, 1612-1619. 1/4 Reichstaler 1614. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Mark Sittich of Hohenems, 1612-19, quarter thaler of 1614. Extremely rare, handsome patina, very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in round (shown here) and klippe format (KM 35) 1614-16. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 6.92 g.

Catalog reference: KM 34 (round format), Probszt 992; Zöttl 1190 (Type 2).
