Künker sale 406, lot 4652

The first specimen was lot 20217 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "Salzburg. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau Klippe 2 Taler 1593, cleaned XF with a mount trace on one corner. An attractive piece featuring St. Rudbertus on the obverse and a tower on the reverse buffeted by the four winds." The second specimen was lot 4652 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,443 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, SALZBURG, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, 1587-1612. Doppelte Reichstalerklippe 1593. Turmprägung. Geschenkmünze an die Truppen. Hübsche Patina, kl. Henkelspur, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich of Raitenau, 1587-1612, klippe double thaler of 1593, tower coinage, bonus money for the troops. Handsome patina, mount mark, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Davenport assigns the regular round issue and the klippe shown here the same catalog number. On this occasion, the archbishop also struck Dav-8192 (single thaler), -8193 (8 thaler), -8194 (6 thaler), -8195 (5 thaler), -8196 (4 thaler), -8197 (triple thaler), -8198 (double thaler, shown here), -8199 (1½ thaler) plus klippes.
