Künker sale 386, lot 6032

This specimen was lot 6032 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,360 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SALZBURG, ERZBISTUM, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, 1587-1612. 2 Dukaten 1593, mit Titel Rudolfs II. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 62 (5774652-008). GOLD. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Feiner Prägeglanz, min. Knickspur, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich of Raitneau, 1587-1612, double ducat of 1593, struck in the name of Rudolf II. Scarce in this quality, well struck, minor nick, extremely fine to uncirculated, graded NGC MS-62.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type is listed for 1587-97. The obverse shows St. Rupert above the arms and the imperial eagle on the reverse. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
