Salzburg 1513 1/3 guldiner
This specimen was lot 1537 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Salzburg, Erzbistum. Leonhard von Keutschach, 1495-1519. 1/3 Guldiner 1513, Salzburg. (Rosette) ORA PROME SANCTE RVDBERTE Brustbild nach rechts. Rv. (Rosette) LEONARD DE KEWTSCH' ARE' SAL' Mitriertes, vierfeldiges Wappen zwischen 15 - 13. Von grösster Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. NGC AU50. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Leonhard von Keutschach, 1495-1519, one third guldiner of 1513, Salzburg mint. Obverse: quartered arms divide the date. Of the highest rarity, Extremely fine, Beautiful condition with magnificent patina.)"
When the thaler first appeared in the early sixteenth century, it was equal to the goldgulden and had the alternate name of guldiner. By the end of the century, the guldiner had become the gulden and slipped to five-sixths of a thaler.
