Salzburg 1520 batzen rev JElsen 259-1022.jpg

This specimen was lot 1022 in Jean Elsen price list 259 (Brussels, January-March 2012), where it was offered at € 125. The catalog noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, SALZBOURG, Archevêché, Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg (1519-1540), AR Batzen, 1520, Droit: Les écus de l'archevêché et de l'archevêque accolés sous un chapeau de cardinal. En dessous, la date. Revers: B. de saint Rupert de face, tenant un saloir et une crosse. Très Beau à Superbe (Archbishopric of Salzburg, Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg (1519-1540), silver batzen of 1520. Obverse: arms of the archbishop and of the archbishopric, cardinal's hat above, date below; reverse: facing bust of St. Rupert, bearing a crozier and a salt casket. VF - EF)"

We aren't quite sure of the face value of this coin as issues of the seventeenth century were based on pfennig and kreuzer and not batzen, a coin better known in Switzerland. A batzen was usually four kreuzer.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 2,95 g.

Catalog reference: Probszt, 258; Schulten, 4317.
