The first specimen was lot 2964 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 6,250 CHF (aboout US$7,458 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Salzburg, Erzbistum, Matthäus Lang von Wellenberg, 1519-1540 Doppelter Guldiner 1521. Auf die Einweihung der Radianakapelle in Wellenberg. Selten. Vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, Mathaus Lang, 1519-40, double guldiner of 1521, on the consecration of the new chapel at Wellenburg. Rare, Extremely fine, Attractive patina.)"
On the occasion of the opening of the new church, the archbishop issued a quadruple guldiner (Dav-A8155), a triple guldiner (-8155), a double guldiner (-8156, shown here) and a single guldiner (-8157). The second specimen was lot 2541 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,107 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg, 1519-1540. Doppelter Guldiner 1521, Hall, auf die Einweihung der Radianakapelle in Wellenburg. Stempel von Ulrich Ursentaler d. Ä. Variante mit dem Schloß Wellenburg auf der Rückseite rechts. RR Hübsche Patina, min. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön +. Die heilige Radiana (Radegund von Wellenburg, Ó um 1290 oder 1340) war eine Viehmagd aus dem Schloß Wellenburg bei Augsburg. Der Legende nach pflegte sie Arme und Kranke im Siechenhaus (Seuchenhaus) und brachte ihnen vom Munde abgesparte Milch, Butter und Brot. Eines Tages soll sie auf dem Weg dorthin vom Schloßherrn angehalten worden sein, und auf seine Frage, was sie forttrage, antwortete sie, es wären Wasser, Kamm und Seife zur Säuberung der Kranken. Als man ihr den Korb aus den Händen riß wurden tatsächlich nur diese Sachen vorgefunden. Zur Strafe für diese Notlüge schickte Gott ihr aber zwei Wölfe, die sie auf dem Heimweg überfielen und so schwer verletzten, daß sie drei Tage später verstarb. (Saint Radiana (Radegund von Wellenburg, lived around 1290 or 1340) was a milkmaid from the castle of Wellenburg near Augsburg. According to legend, she cared for the poor and sick in the infirmary (plague house) and brought them milk, butter and bread, saving their lives. One day she is said to have been stopped by the lord of the castle on her way there, and when he asked what she was carrying away, she replied that it was water, a comb and soap for cleaning the sick. When the basket was snatched from her hands, only these things were actually found. As punishment for this white lie, God sent two wolves who attacked her on the way home and injured her so badly that she died three days later.)"
