Salzburg 1513 4 ducats Fr-577b
This specimen was lot 5338 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011), where it sold for 35,000 CHF (about US$46,460 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Salzburg, Erzbistum Leonhard von Keutschach, 1495-1519. 4 Dukaten 1513. Brustbild nach rechts. Rv. Mitra über vierteiligem Wappenschild, zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. (Archbishopric of Salzburg, Leonhard von Keutschach, 1495-1519, quadruple ducat of 1513. Obverse: bust to right; reverse: bishop's mitre over quartered arms dividing date. Very rare, extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
