Russia 1988 150 rubles
This specimen was lot 50271 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $964. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA--U.S.S.R.. 150 Ruble, 1988. PCGS PROOF-69 DEEP CAMEO Secure Holder. Struck in platinum. 1000th anniversary of Russian literature." This issue commemorates the 1000th anniversary of Russian literature and depicts a Russian Orthodox monk chronicling the deeds of Grand Duke Igor. It was accompanied by gold 50 (KM Y213) and 100 rubles (KM Y214). The Communist regime, in its declining years, issued dozens of commemoratives in various metals as a means of earning foreign exchange.
