This specimen was lot 57698 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $40. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 5 Rubles, 1988. Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Mint. PCGS PROOF-67 Deep Cameo." We note three commemorative five rubles struck in 1988: Y217, Y218 and Y219. This one honors the statue of Peter the Great put up by Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg. It is virtually worthless in all grades but most examples seen have been mishandled (hairlines, PVC damage, etc.). The coinage reform of 1998 (1000 old rubles = one new ruble) rendered these coins obsolete.
Recorded mintage: 1,675,000 plus proofs.
Specification: copper-nickel, 35 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-Y217.
