SB923-75636r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75636 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 20 Kopeks, 1911-CNB EB. St. Petersburg Mint. Nicholas II. NGC MS-62. A myriad of colors grace the surfaces of this Uncirculated piece ranging from argent to russet gray, all while the reverse is dominated by viridescent amber coloration. Boldly struck and simply a delight to behold, there will be interest from those dabbling in Russian numismatics." This type is listed for 1867-93 and 1901-14. The nineteenth century dates are scarce in nice condition but the later dates are common with, of course, the exception of the proofs. Mintmaster Elikum Babayantz ("ЭБ") issued regular circulation strikes 1906-12 and proofs only in 1913 whereas mintmaster BC is noted for 1912-17. In 1914, Russia plunged into World War One, which conflict would lead to the destruction of the regime.

Recorded mintage: 7,100,000, common.

Specification: 3.6 g, 0.500 fine silver, 22 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-Y22a.1; Bit-111.
