Stack's Bowers 2014 ANA sale, lot 1538
Sta ANA 1538r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1538 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 1/4 Kopek, 1890-CNB. NGC MS-66 RB. Mintage combined with the 1889 issue. Finest graded at both NGC and PCGS. Highly lustrous with much mint red still present." The production of the copper coinage was farmed out to branch mints in the early and mid nineteenth century but after 1876 St. Petersburg was the sole producer of this denomination, also known as a polushka. Despite the small mintage, this date is common.

Recorded mintage: 181,000 for 1889-90.

Specification: copper, 3 g reported by the SCWC but likely 0.80 g as reported for Y-47.1.

Catalog reference: KM Y-29; Bit-213.
