Goldberg NY International sale 59, lot 2201

This specimen was lot 2201 in Goldberg's NY International sale 59 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rouble 1890 AГ. Rare date with a mintage of only 90,300 pcs. Authenticated and graded by NGC AU 53 (# 2843931-008). Pearly gray tone. About uncirculated." This date is from a type struck 1886-94. The type must have been subjected to extensive melting as all dates are rare. In 1886, the ruble was reduced to 20 grams after having been fixed at 20.73 grams since 1798. Mintmaster AG was Appolon Grasgov.
