This specimen was lot 30498 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $4,248.80. The catalog description[1] noted, "Alexander II gold 3 Roubles 1871 CПБ-HI MS64 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Obv. Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle. Rev. Date and value in circle. Well struck, with orange-golden color and full mint luster. A bit of excess metal is visible around the reverse rim, but no significant contact marks. Quite Rare in this Choice condition." This type is listed for 1869-85 and is fairly common in circulated condition. It superseded a platinum three rubles of 1828-45. In 1886, the five rubles was revised to match the French twenty francs d'or, resulting in a weight reduction to .186 troy oz, and the three rubles was terminated.

Specification: 3.92 g, 0.917 fine gold, .115 troy oz AGW.
