Sincona sale 65, lot 219

This specimen was lot 219 in Sincona sale 65 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$461 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Kopeck 1844, Ekaterinburg Mint, EM. Good very fine. (Копейка 1844, Екатеринбургский МД, ЕМ. 10,31 г. Биткин 563 (R1). Состояние лучше чем очень хорошее.)"

This type was struck 1840-44 at Ekaterinburg (shown here), Suzun and Izhora. The reverse legend, "❁ 1 ❁/КОПѢЙКА/СЕРЕБРОМЪ", means "one kopek silver." The SCWC reports a weight of 4 g for this issue, manifestly too low.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.

Specification: 10.24 g, copper, 27 mm diameter, this specimen 10.31 g.

Catalog reference: Bitkin 563 (R1), KM C144.1.
