Künker sale 294, lot 5175

This specimen was lot 5175 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,157 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSLAND, KAISERREICH, Nikolaus I. 1825-1855. Ku.-3 Kopeken 1849, St. Petersburg. Novodel der Probe. Mit glattem Rand. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Polierte Platte, min berührt (PROOF). (empire of Russia, Nicholas I, 1825-55, three kopeks of 1849, St. Petersburg mint, novodel of a pattern, with plain edge. Very scarce, especially in this quality, proof.)"

The SCWC notes this as a pattern, not a novodel, as there was no regular issue 3 kopeks in 1849. It is quite scarce. We follow the auction cataloguer's attribution to St. Petersburg even tho the mintmark shown is for Izhora.

Recorded mintage: unknown but few.

Specification: copper, this specimen 15,49 g.

Catalog reference: KM Pn121, Bitkin H 946 (R2).
