Künker sale 400, lot 631

This specimen was lot 631 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €150,000 (about US$194,595 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSLAND, KAISERREICH, Alexander I. 1801-1825. Rubel 1801, St. Petersburg (Bankmünzstätte). Probe. Büste r.//Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Zepter und Reichsapfel in den Fängen, auf der Brust St. Georgsschild, umher die Kette des Andreasordens, oben Krone. Von großer Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar. Feiner Prägeglanz, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (empire of Russia, Alexander I, 1801-25, ruble of 1801, St. Petersburg (bank mint), pattern. Obverse: bust right; reverse: Crowned double-headed eagle with scepter and imperial orb in its claws, St. George's shield on the chest, the chain of the Order of St. Andrew around, crown at the top. Of great rarity. Magnificent specimen. Fine luster, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This pattern was not adopted and the portrait of the tsar would not appear on a ruble until the time of Alexander III. The only design change to the circulating ruble was moving the date from above the eagle (Dav-280) to below (Dav-281).

Recorded mintage: unknown but few.

Specification: 20.73 g, 0.868 fine silver, this specimen 20,22 g.
