Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1456

This specimen was lot 1456 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €550 (about US$725 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSIE, Paul Ier (1796-1801), AR polupoltinnik, 1797, Saint-Pétersbourg. Rare. Beau à Très Beau. (empire of Russia, Paul I, 1796-1801, silver quarter ruble of 1797, St. Petersburg mint. Rare, Fine - Very Fine.)"

This is the last issue of this denomination at this weight. The superseding type (KM C98.1a, struck 1801) was only 5.18 g. The assayer's initials (incorrectly reported in the SCWC as ФA) stand for Feodor Tsetreus, who served 1797-1801.

Recorded mintage: 28,000, one year type, rare.

Specification: 7.31 g, 0.868 fine silver, this specimen 7,27 g.
