This specimen was lot 31159 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Russia: Catherine II gold 5 Roubles 1781-СПБ AU50 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. This conditionally rare issue displays near full mint luster, with no significant flaws, and a nice strike. A superb example of this popular Catherine type." This five rubles, tho less rare than those of Elizabeth, is still plenty expensive. It is listed for 1778-82.
Recorded mintage: 63,000, a common date for a rare type.
Specification: 6.54 g, 0.917 fine gold, .192 troy oz AGW.
