Regensburg 1691-MF 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 3164 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,674 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS LEOPOLDS I. 1/2 Reichstaler 1691 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1680 geändert), mit Titel Leopolds I. Münzmeister Michael Federer. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Vermutlich Unikum. Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Kreß 98, München 1955, Nr. 3185; der Auktion Bankhaus Aufhäuser 1, München 1984, Nr. 1667; der Slg. Egon Beckenbauer, Auktion Bankhaus Aufhäuser 11, München 1995, Nr. 1257; der Auktion Bankhaus Partin 49, München 1996, Nr. 887; der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 41, Osnabrück 1998, Nr. 1424 und der Slg Dr. Karl Walter Bach, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 238, Osnabrück 2013, Nr. 4682. (city of Regensburg, half thaler of 1691, struck in the name of Leopold I, 1691/80 overdate. Supremely rare, perhaps unique, some planchet defects, very fine.)"
None of the half thalers of the seventeenth century are common altho they were struck in most years. This type was struck 1665-67, 1672, 1680, 1691 and 1694.
