Regensburg (1741-45)-ICB CDO 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 3223 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,412 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES ÖSTERREICHISCHEN ERBFOLGEKRIEGES UND DES KAISERS KARL VII., 1740-1745. Kurant- und Scheidemünzen aus der Zeit des Kaisers Karl VII. ½ Reichstaler o. J. (1741-1745), mit Titel Karls VII. Münzmeister Johann Christoph Busch. Stempelschneider Christoph Daniel Oexlein. Mit Stadtschlüsseln. RR Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (city of Regensburg, undated half thaler, circa 1741-45, struck in the name of Charles VII, with city keys. Very rare, attractive example with fine patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The campaign of Karl VII of Bavaria represented the last serious attempt to take the increasingly worthless imperial crown away from the Hapsburgs. Two generations later, in 1806, Napoleon would abolish the Holy Roman Empire and nobody would lift a sword in its defense. Regensburg, completely surrounded by Bavarian territory, had little choice but to strike coinage in the pretender's name. The SCWC lists two different half thalers for Charles VII: KM 264 (city arms, shown here) and KM 265 (city view). Both are expensive.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 14,56 g.
Catalog reference: KM 264, Beckenbauer 6248 (this example); Slg. Bach (Auktion Künker 238) 4780.
