Regensburg (1742)-ICB CDO thaler Dav-A2615
This specimen was lot 3222 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €16,000 (about US$20,994 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES ÖSTERREICHISCHEN ERBFOLGEKRIEGES UND DES KAISERS KARL VII., 1740-1745. Kurant- und Scheidemünzen aus der Zeit des Kaisers Karl VII. Reichstaler o. J. (um 1742), mit Titel Karls VII. Münzmeister Johann Christoph Busch. Stempelschneider der Vorderseite Johann Leonhard Oexlein, der Rückseite Christoph Daniel Oexlein. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 63 (6643582-010). Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (city of Regensburg, undated thaler, circa 1742, struck in the name of Charles VII. Graded NGC MS-63, very scarce, especially in this quality, cabinet example, handsome patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The campaign of Karl VII of Bavaria represented the last serious attempt to take the increasingly worthless imperial crown away from the Hapsburgs. Two generations later, in 1806, Napoleon would abolish the Holy Roman Empire and nobody would lift a sword in its defense. Regensburg, completely surrounded by Bavarian territory, had little choice but to strike coinage in the pretender's name. The double thaler of this design is not in Davenport but appeared in this sale. We listed it as Dav-A2615a.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 29,19 g.
