Künker sale 405, lot 3225

This specimen was lot 3225 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,412 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES ÖSTERREICHISCHEN ERBFOLGEKRIEGES UND DES KAISERS KARL VII., 1740-1745. Kurant- und Scheidemünzen aus der Zeit des Kaisers Karl VII. ¼ Reichstaler o. J. (1740-1745), mit Titel Karls VII. Münzmeister Johann Christoph Busch. Stempelschneider Christoph Daniel Oexlein. Von großer Seltenheit. Laut Münzakten nur 104 Exemplare geprägt. Prachtexemplar. Feine Patina, fast Stempelglanz. (city of Regensburg, undated quarter thaler, circa 1741-45, struck in the name of Charles VII, with city keys. Extremely rare, 104 pieces struck, cabinet example, fine patina, about uncirculated.)"

The campaign of Karl VII of Bavaria represented the last serious attempt to take the increasingly worthless imperial crown away from the Hapsburgs. Two generations later, in 1806, Napoleon would abolish the Holy Roman Empire and nobody would lift a sword in its defense. Regensburg, completely surrounded by Bavarian territory, had little choice but to strike coinage in the pretender's name. This is the only quarter thaler for Charles VII.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 7,33 g.

Catalog reference: KM 276, Beckenbauer 6336 (this example); Slg. Bach (Auktion Künker 238) 4782.
