Regensburg (1740) thaler Dav-2613
This specimen was lot 30324 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Regensburg. Taler, ND (ca. 1740). NGC MS-63. A compelling motif with a city and harbor view reverse, along with an absolutely fabulous portrait of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. The finest certified example. Lightly toned with razor sharp details, flawless rims and quite attractive toning. The sort of coin that if acquired by a museum would likely never be deaccessioned. Pedigree: From the Q. David Bowers Collection." This rare type is from a series of undated thalers from Regensburg, most likely issued around the time of the emperor's death, which occasioned the War of the Austrian Succession.
