Künker sale 353, lot 4201

This specimen was lot 4201 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €360 (about US$501 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Wilhelm II. 1888-1918. 20 Mark 1889, A. Winz. Randfehler, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, William II, 1888-1918, twenty mark of 1889. Minor rim nick, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1888-89 at the beginning of the reign of William II. Altho not rare, the 1889 has 1/14 of the mintage of the 1888. In 1890, the eagle was modified slightly (KM 521) and that is the version most often seen.

Recorded mintage: 775,512, a common date.

Specification: 7.97 g, 0.900 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 516, Fr-3830, J. 250.
