Sincona sale 54, lot 186

This specimen was lot 186 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$1,904 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Brandenburg / Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1840-1861. 2 Friedrichs dor 1846 A, Berlin. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William IV, 1840-61, double frederick d'or of 1846, Berlin mint. Good very fine.)"

This type was struck 1841-49 and 1852. The last double friedrichs d'or was struck in 1855 (KM 470) and was replaced by the gold krone (KM 492, struck 1861-70), which contained about 70/83 of the gold in the previous denomination. The gold krone was in turn superseded by the gold twenty mark of the German Empire. The gold doppelter friedrichs d'or was worth about 3½ ducats.
