Prussia 1848-A thaler Dav-769
This specimen was lot 75069 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Prussia. Taler, 1848-A. Berlin Mint. Friedrich Wilhelm IV. NGC AU-58." This is the most common date of a type struck 1842-52 but no date is rare. A mining thaler (KM 455) was also struck in 1848. In 1871, with the successful conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War, king Wilhelm assumed the title of Emperor of Germany. The currency was reformed to use pfennig and marks and the thaler was dropped, tho it remained legal tender at three mark.
Recorded mintage: 3,743,000.
Specification: 22.72 g, 0.750 fine silver, 34 mm diameter, lettered edge.
Catalog reference: Dav-769; KM-445; AKS-74; Olding-305; Thun-256; Kahnt-375.
