Stack's Bowers November 2025 Collectors Choice sale, part of lot 78371

This specimen was part of lot 78371 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), which sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Trio of 200 Escudos (3 Pieces), 1996. Lisbon Mint. All PCGS Certified. 1) PCGS PROOF-67 Deep Cameo. KM-690A. Portuguese arrival in China issue. 2) PCGS PROOF-67 Deep Cameo. KM-691A. Portuguese establishment in Macau issue. 3) PCGS PROOF-66 Deep Cameo. KM-692A. Portuguese discovery of Taiwan issue." This commemorative was struck in copper-nickel (KM 690), silver (KM 690a) and gold (KM 690b). We don't think any version actually circulated. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.

Recorded mintage: 750,000 in copper-nickel plus 6,500 Specimens plus 7,961 in silver plus 3,000 in gold.

Specification: KM 690: 21 g, copper-nickel, 36 mm diameter; KM 690a: 26.5 g, 0.925 fine silver; KM 690b: 27.2 g, 0.97 fine gold.
