Portugal H3035-31505r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31505 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 2-1/2 Escudos 1937 MS66 NGC. Absolutely striking, silvery-gray surfaces are emphasized by mottled russet toning and high rims. The devices, too, are outstanding, fully-struck and accented by an incredible amount of underlying luster that dramatically surrounds the ship's sails. Very appealing and currently the finest known-certified example of this undisputed key date in this series." The specimen shown is from a type struck for Portugal 1932-51. The handsome caravel was also used on five and ten escudos coins. When the issue of 2½ escudos resumed in 1963, it was a copper-nickel coin.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000, the key date.

Specification: 3.5 g, .650 fine silver, .073 troy oz ASW, reeded edge, 20.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 580, Gomes-30.03.
