This specimen was lot 32666 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 100 Reis, 1891. Carlos I. NGC MS-64. A pleasingly original near-Gem with lightly glossy surfaces and wholesome autumnal toning." This type was struck 1890-98 and this date is fairly common. King Carlos ruled from 1889 until his assassination at the hands of an anarchist in 1908. His son Manuel II ruled for only two years before he was deposed and the Republic established.
