The first specimen was lot 1388 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it sold for $305.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL: Carlos I, 1889-1908, AE 5 reis, 1893, rare in proof, NGC graded PF62 BR." This type was struck in Lisbon 1890-1906. King Carlos ruled from 1889 until his assassination at the hands of an anarchist in 1908. His son Manuel II ruled for only two years before he was deposed and the Republic established. This five réis piece is the last struck under the monarchy.
