Portugal 1870 500 reis

from the Stack's Bowers 2019 NYINC sale, lot 43875

This specimen was lot 43875 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $408. The catalog description^[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 500 Reis, 1870. NGC MS-62. Fully struck with light sprinkled tone over lustrous surfaces." This type was struck in Lisbon 1863-72, 1875-79, 1886-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese silver coins altho the early dates can be hard to find.

Recorded mintage: 314,000.

Specification: 12.50 g, 0.917 fine silver.
